Gateway Pine Shavings started in 2009 as an affiliate company of Thru the Woods – a portable sawmill business with an eye on "tree-cycling". Local farmers, for whom Thru the Woods was producing lumber, inquired about also obtaining the sawdust waste typically accrued during the milling process as a bedding option for their animals.

Aware of unhealthy hardwood dust, such as black walnut and other tree species, that could be found mixed in sawdust – and tapping into their personal desire to “go green” with whatever they did with their sawmill business – owners Sue and Jim Thomson researched the pine shavings option and resources for two years and formed Gateway Pine Shavings to offer an eco-friendly livestock bedding product produced from 100% pine wood materials from New Jersey forests.

Our pine primarily comes from forest management activities, such as selective harvests or fuel load reduction initiatives to improve NJ forests. It is not a waste material that could contain a number of harmful woods, but rather a quality product made specifically for your animal.

Orders vary based on actual quantity needed and delivery frequency. Delivering in smaller loads is more affordable, assures the bedding will always be fresh, optimizes strict quality control, minimizes waste, and maximizes usage – so you always have fresh shavings for your animals.
